Esprit Orchestra (The)

Alex Pauk, composer, conductor, educator, entrepreneur, invigorated interest in orchestral music by Canadian composers when, in 1983, he founded The Esprit Orchestra in Toronto – Canada’s only orchestra devoted exclusively to new music. Through building and sustaining its high-caliber performances, commissioning program, innovative programming ventures (80 percent Canadian), and many recordings, Pauk has made Esprit a major force in the development and promotion of Canadian music at home and abroad. The orchestra also maintains an active education program for schoolchildren in the Toronto area. As a composer, Alex Pauk has written a great variety of works for large and small ensembles, as well as numerous works for dance, theatre, film, and multimedia. As a conductor, Pauk has led the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre symphonique de Québec, the CBC Vancouver Orchestra, and the Hannaford Street Silver Band in concerts of contemporary music.
