Eleanor James is a native of Toronto, Canada, an honours graduate of the University of Toronto, and a recipient of the Eaton Graduating Award and the Chalmers Foundation Award. She began her career as a founding member of the Canadian Opera Company Ensemble in Toronto. In 1983 she was a prizewinner at the Metropolitan Opera auditions in Toronto and Detroit.
In 1983 she encountered the work of R. Murray Schafer. Over the course of twenty years, Schafer has written numerous works for Ms. James’ rich voice and unique dramatic and interpretive powers. Since June 2003 Eleanor James has appeared as a frequent guest with the Esprit Orchestra in Toronto, the Newfoundland Sound Symposium, the Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival, and the Winnipeg International New Music Festival. In 2004 Ms. James founded the music-theatre-opera group, The Lyric Stage, in Peterborough, Ontario, where she is Artistic Director and Resident Stage Director.
