Established in 1989 by pianist and conductor Lorraine Vaillancourt, the NEM became the first permanent chamber orchestra featuring an exclusively contemporary repertoire in Canada.
The NEM offers compelling performances of today's works, giving the music the time and attention it deserves. Its repertoire encompasses diverse aesthetics, spans all continents and focuses on new compositions, in particular, through its biennial International Forum for Young Composers in November. In addition to concerts and public rehearsals, the NEM organizes lectures and panel discussions, which provide a perfect venue for discussing and reflecting on new music.
The Ensemble has rapidly gained international recognition. Testifying to this are the invitations the NEM has received from the United States, Europe, Asia and Australia, as well as the interest of the numerous partners which have associated themselves to its Montreal events.
