Michel Bettez

Michel Bettez was unanimously awarded a first prize for bassoon at the Conservatoire de Montréal, and won a Meisterklassendiplom from the Hochschule für Musik of Munich where he studied with Karl Kolbinger. He then played for a year with the orchestra of the Nuremberg Opera House. On his return to Montreal, he was appointed first bassoon with the Orchestre des Jeunes du Québec, a post he held for three years.

In 1984 he won an honourable mention at the Concours du Prix d'Europe, a competition for young Quebec musicians, and then appeared as soloist with the Orchestre des Jeunes du Québec, the Orchestre métropolitain and Radio-Canada's chamber orchestra in Montreal. In February 1987 he gave a solo recital as part of Montreal's Début series.

Michel Bettez has been first bassoonist with the Orchestre métropolitain since the fall of 1984, and first bassoon with the Orchestre symphonique de Laval since 1990. He has also been a member of the Nouvel Ensemble Moderne (NEM) since 1989. With this group he has made a number of tours in Canada, Europe (France, the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, England, Spain), the United States, Japan and Australia. He has worked on occasion with I Musici de Montréal, the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, the McGill Chamber Orchestra, the Opéra de Montréal, and with the Pentaèdre woodwind quintet (from 1985 to 1995) and Les Vents de Montréal woodwind ensemble.

Michel Bettez has taught at the Conservatoire de musique du Québec in Montreal since the fall of 1993. His instrument is a Moosmann bassoon model 222-A.
