If you want Christmas music that is serious, solemn, with majesty and a good degree of mystery, this is for you: 14 selections, all with Latin texts, music from the mid-16th and early 17th Centuries. Half of the program is devoted to Giovanni Gabrieli, and seven lesser known composers account for the other seven pieces. The "other seven" are Claude Godimel, Gio-vanni Picchi, Sebastian Aguilera de Heredia, Johann Hermann Schein, Juan de Esquivel Barahona, Giovanni Battista Grillo, and Pedro Rimonte. The brass sound solemnly, the organ sounds its stately underpinnings, the choir and soloists blend in seriousness for a quiet reverence as the Canadians breathe life and love into these exquisite selections.
