Rinat Shaham makes COC debut as Bizet’s Carmen

The Canadian Opera Company has announced that Israeli mezzo-soprano Rinat Shaham will sing the first six performances of Carmen at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto on January 27, 30, February 2, 5, 7, 9, 2010. She steps in for Beth Clayton, who has had to withdraw for health reasons.

One of the world’s most renowned interpreters of Bizet’s gypsy, Rinat Shaham makes her COC debut in this role, which she has performed with several opera companies including Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, Minnesota Opera, Opéra de Montreal, Florida Grand Opera, New York City Opera, Vancouver Opera, New Israeli Opera, and the Glyndebourne Festival. She will also sing the role in the coming months with opera companies in Stuttgart, Baden-Baden, and Berlin.

Rinat Shaham has recorded two CDs for ATMA Classique: The Psalms of David, an intriguing recording of music by Benedetto Marcello from 17th-century Venice’s Jewish quarter (ACD2 2233), and Fantasy in Blue, which pairs the music of Henry Purcell with songs by George Gershwin (ACD2 2253).

“She sings with clarity, style and passionate expression. These psalms are very moving at times, and most of the reason is Rinat Shaham.”
