André Henry
International trumpet soloist André Henry was born in 1969 in Le Cheylard, Ardèche. He began studying trumpet at age twelve with the local wind band, later working with Jacques Jarmasson at the Avignon Conservatory. In 1987—after only one year of formal study—he was unanimously awarded the Conservatory’s First Prize in Trumpet, followed in 1988 by the First Prize in Cornet.
A turning point came in 1991 when he met Pierre Dutot of the Lyon Conservatory (CNSM). Dutot encouraged him to compete in major national and international competitions, where Henry quickly distinguished himself. His impressive list of awards includes:
- First Prize, Kiwanis Club of Lyon National Virtuoso Competition
- First Prize, Rhône-Alpes Best Trumpet Player Competition
- First Prize (unanimous), Villeurbanne National Conservatory
- Laureate and first French finalist at the Toulon International Wind Competition (1992)
- Laureate of the Maurice André International Competition
- First Prize, World Trumpet Competition, and Special Prize for Best Interpretation of a Contemporary Work
In 1996, he won First Prize at the Geneva International Music Competition—an achievement not attained by a French trumpeter since Maurice André 35 years earlier. His success led to prestigious solo appearances worldwide, including in Saint Petersburg, Caracas, Montreal, Vancouver, Ottawa, New York, Tokyo, Porto Alegre, Paris, Davos, Munich, Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou. Several composers have written works for him, including Vicente Roncero (Spain), Marc Stekart (France), Arthur Barbosa (Brazil), and Ivan Jevtić (France).
From 1993 to 2000, Henry served as Principal Trumpet with the Orchestre des Pays de la Loire and as Assistant Professor at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Lyon. He now maintains an active international career as soloist and pedagogue. A frequent guest as Super Soloist with the China Philharmonic Orchestra, he performs regularly across Asia, Brazil, Belgium, Spain, and Macedonia, and gives annual masterclasses to more than 230 trumpeters worldwide.
Since 1996, André Henry has performed exclusively on STOMVI trumpets and serves as Collection Director for Éditions Billaudot in Paris.
