Les Disciples de Massenet
The Disciples of Massenet Choir was founded in 1928 by Charles Goulet, who remained its principal conductor until 1963. During its eight decades of existence, the choir has sung with renowned soloists and under the direction of numerous guest conductors; it has also recorded a dozen albums. Directed by Lucie Roy since January 2001, it has approximately thirty amateur members, driven by a high ideal of quality. Regarding its 2003 performance of Francis Poulenc’s Gloria, critics spoke of a “balanced choral sound, beautiful intonation, and a lovely blending.”
The choir primarily sings classical repertoire, but it also explores world music. Thus, in recent years, in addition to numerous works from the great Western tradition, from Pachelbel’s Magnificat to Pierre Mercure’s Cantate pour une joie, he has performed Astor Piazzolla’s Las estaciones porteños (The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires) and given the Quebec and Canadian premiere of José María Vitier’s Misa cubana.
