Paul Stewart
Since his debut with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra in 1981, Nova Scotian Paul Stewart has become one of Canada’s most sought-after musicians. He has performed with the Toronto, Vancouver, and Winnipeg Symphony Orchestras, the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, the National Arts Centre Orchestra, I Musici de Montréal, and other orchestras in Canada and abroad. As a
solo recitalist, he has performed in Canada, the United States (Carnegie Hall, New York; the Kennedy Center, Washington), Europe, and Asia. He has also performed with renowned artists such as James Campbell, James Ehnes, Maureen Forrester, Rivka Golani, Ben Heppner, and Jessye Norman. In 1996, he made two particularly noteworthy appearances: a solo recital at Wigmore Hall in London (broadcast by the BBC) and an enthusiastically received performance of Rachmaninov’s Fourth Piano Concerto with the Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra at the Moscow Conservatory. This concert was broadcast in Russia and released as an award-winning recording.
His recordings include works by Beethoven, Schubert, Liszt, Ravel, and Britten. Paul Stewart is also one of the few pianists on the international scene who performs the rarely played music of the Russian composer Nicolai Medtner. He is currently preparing a complete recording of Medtner’s sonatas as well as his complete chamber music. Paul Stewart is a professor of piano at the University of Montreal.
