To speak of J.S. Bach’s “works for lute” as if they were a musical corpus conceived and performed as a single collection would be historical revisionism. The extreme diversity of sources, compositional types, and probable dates of composition strongly argues against any notion of a unified whole. In truth, these works span almost the entirety of Bach’s musical maturity, as well as a wide range of musical forms and concepts, demonstrating Bach’s sustained and multifaceted interest in the lute. The renowned lutenist Stephen Stubbs brings to life here several of Bach’s greatest works written for this ancient instrument.
