Description
“The composer’s extraordinary talent in all kinds of music is well known, but he is especially admired in the vocal genre, having a particular genius for expressing the energy of English words, by which he stirred the passions of all his listeners.” This is how Henry Playford introduced the first volume of his anthology of Purcell’s songs, aptly titled *Orpheus Britannicus*, which appeared in 1698, three years after the composer’s untimely death. These words still hold true, for rarely since Purcell has a composer succeeded in setting the words of the English language to music with such beauty and emotion. Along with examples of Purcell’s “extraordinary talent” in instrumental music, this disc contains some of his most remarkable solo vocal pieces in English for that angelic voice, the countertenor.
