Bruce Haynes
Bruce Haynes began his career on the modern oboe in 1960, and soon after turned to the study, performance, and making of historical oboes. In 1972, he introduced the Baroque oboe into the curriculum of the Dutch conservatory system and taught at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, attracting students from around the world—many of whom have since become well-known performers.
Mr. Haynes appeared as a soloist on numerous recordings and published some forty articles on the Baroque oboe, as well as a definitive book on its repertoire (Music for Oboe). He moved to Montreal in the 1980s, where he raised his family with viol player Susie Napper. He held a doctorate in musicology for his research on pitch standards throughout the centuries. Bruce Haynes contributed on various topics to the new editions of MGG and the New Grove Dictionary. He also taught at the Université de Montréal and McGill University.
Bruce passed away on May 17, 2011. RIP Bruce.
