David Jalbert

An elegant and warmly expressive virtuoso with an eclectic repertoire, David Jalbert has secured a prominent place among the leading pianists of his generation: “As of today, we must add the name of David Jalbert to the pantheon of our great performers” (L’actualité).

Named by CBC as one of the 15 greatest Canadian pianists of all time, Mr. Jalbert performs frequently around the world as a recitalist and concerto soloist, and his recordings have been universally praised by critics. His complete recording of Fauré’s Nocturnes was selected as the modern reference version by the jury of La Tribune des critiques de disques on France Culture. His albums devoted to Shostakovich’s 24 Preludes and Fugues, Op. 87, Bach’s Goldberg Variations, and American repertoire have enjoyed similar acclaim.

As a soloist, he has appeared with conductors such as Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Skitch Henderson, and Bramwell Tovey. An accomplished chamber musician, he has collaborated with Nicola Benedetti, Rachel Barton Pine, Jean-Philippe Collard, Bomsori, and performs extensively with Triple Forte, the trio he forms with violinist Jasper Wood and cellist Denise Djokic. Mr. Jalbert is the recipient of numerous national and international competition prizes, six Opus Awards, and is a five-time Juno Award finalist. In 2007, he was awarded the prestigious Virginia Parker Prize from the Canada Council for the Arts.

A graduate of the Juilliard School, the Université de Montréal, the Glenn Gould School, and the Conservatoire de musique du Québec à Rimouski, David Jalbert is currently Professor of Piano at the University of Ottawa.
