For his first collaboration with ATMA, the Canadian pianist, recently awarded the Canada Council for the Arts’ Virginia Parker Prize, delivers a masterful interpretation of Shostakovich’s 24 Preludes and Fugues. A keyboard masterpiece by the Russian composer, the Preludes and Fugues are considered among Shostakovich’s most intimate works, those in which the artist distances himself from the Soviet musical establishment and its forced patriotism. Here, through music that is pure and free from ideology, we access the composer’s authentic voice. The recording was made by Anne-Marie Sylvestre during August and September 2007 in the Françoys-Bernier Hall at Domaine Forget, a venue boasting exceptional acoustics.
